About Pernese Rodeos

Although not mentioned in the books, this is probably one of the oldest sports in human history, and I doubt that the sport would have been lost on Pern. With the exception of barrel racing, all of these events are things that would happen on the average ranch-hold (although the bulls would likely be steers and therefore somewhat smaller and less mean-tempered--steers are broken to harness, so they have to have some sort of training, though not necessarily with a rider). As with runnerbeast racing, this would be a natural sporting development.

Included are all of the popular rodeo events: bull riding, bronc riding, saddlebronc riding, mutton-busting (and related chevon-busting, a.k.a. goat riding), barrel racing, calf roping, and team roping.

The rough stock events (bull and bronc riding) would allow dragonriders, but most likely, the Weyr would strongly discourage any of its members from participating. Bull riding is commonly known as "the most dangerous eight seconds in sports," and the risks of injury and death are high. Mutton- and chevon-busting are for young participants between the ages of 5 and 12, and entrants are limited by and assigned mounts according to their weight; older entrants are more likely to be assigned a goat as the horns make the mount more dangerous and more suitable for an older rider (especially one intending to go on to bull riding). The goal of rough stock events is to stay mounted for at least eight seconds (often timed by sending a firelizard between from one end of the arena to the other); in the busting events, the goal is to stay on for as long as possible (most mounts spill their riders within 30 seconds).

The mounted events (barrel racing, calf roping, and team roping) require that the participant have his or her own mount. Barrel racing and calf roping requires that the runnerbeasts be trained, either to be familiar with the course (in barrel racing) or to behave properly when the rider is on the ground; training also helps in the team roping events, but is not necessarily required as the rider should remain in control of their mount at all times. In barrel racing, the rider must circle three barrels in a cloverleaf pattern (counterclockwise around the left barrel, clockwise around the right barrel, and clockwise around the far barrel) without knocking any of the barrels over. Calf roping is a single-rider event where the rider must rope the calf around the neck, dismount, throw the calf (typically by grabbing the far legs and pulling them toward the body), and tie any three feet together. Team roping is the only team event; one rider, called the header, ropes a steer (can be either a steer--a castrated bull--or an older calf with horns) about the horns, and the other rider (the heeler) ropes both hind legs, then the two riders back their mounts in opposite directions until the steer loses its balance and is forced to lie down. All three of these events are timed, with penalties for bad maneuvers (such as knocking a barrel over or causing the calf or steer to fall before intended; the shortest time is the winner.

Rough Stats

Below are tables that depict the statistics of rough stock. These statistics are their base stats; the stocks' stats do not change over time, but as a team or rider wins (or loses) races or roping events, their stats will change slightly, which affects the modifier the runner (or rider) receives during dice rolls for actions during the event.

Rough Stock Maneuvers

Bull Maneuvers and Rating/Difficulty for Rider:

Run: 0
Kick: 1
Spin: 1
Buck: 1
Rear: 1
Crow-hop: 2
Twist: 2
Sunfish: 3

(Difficulty rating equates to a negative modifier on the rider's roll to stay on the bull. Combination difficulty scores accumulate, such that a running twist kick is a difficulty of three--this means the bull is moving forward and kicks with its rear legs, dropping on one shoulder and kicking out to the opposite rear, causing the bull's spine to be straight despite the angle of the kick. Maneuvers are determined by a dice roll.)
