At lunchtime, H'lee rounded up his weyrlings and told them about their new duties, also known as "weyrling duties," tasks which were designed to strengthen their abilities as dragon/rider partners.

"The third duty is Transport Duty. You and your dragon will be available to any Academy resident to transport goods from one location to another. This may be as simple as transporting them across the Academy, or flying them - STRAIGHT - to Snowy or Aurora Holds, or any of the holdings on the peninsula. You may not transport any passengers in the course of discharging your duties, only cargo. If a passenger expects to travel with the cargo, you must summon the dragon on Messenger Duty to assist and carry the passenger."

X'kim and S'nom were assigned to the first shift (13:00-15:00). A'lo and Fayble were assigned to the second shift (15:00-17:00).

The Assignment:
Each rider is given a number of jobs to complete during their six days on duty. For off-site transports (going to a Hold/holding outside the Academy), you need to log your destination, time of departure, and expected time of return with the Watchriders - all three of them. Note: you may pick your date and time of departure to give to the Watchriders.

A'lo
  • Number of Craft-related jobs: 6 (3 off-site, 1 with a passenger)
  • Number of other jobs: 10 (4 off-site, 3 with a passenger)

Fayble
  • Number of Craft-related jobs: 3 (2 off-site, 1 with a passenger)
  • Number of other jobs: 9 (3 off-site, 1 with a passenger)

X'kim
  • Number of Craft-related jobs: 12 (6 off-site, 3 with a passenger)
  • Number of other jobs: 3 (2 off-site, 1 with a passenger)

S'nom
  • Number of Craft-related jobs: 3 (2 off-site, 2 with a passenger)
  • Number of other jobs: 7 (5 off-site, 2 with a passenger)

A'lo

A'lo found himself with transport duty. Apparently he was a part of the second shift, although he didn't really mind. Instead, he waited with his dragon until someone approached him. Around 15:14, he had his first "customer" and instantly nodded his head. Loading up the craft supplies he listened to the directions. "Sure thing, sir." he responded before darting up his dragon with the request before they headed towards the watch towers to speak with Ashendel and the others who were watching. When done, he headed off to Snowy Hold to complete that task. It took him roughly a half hour to get everything sorted out when there before he and his dragon returned, announcing their return to the watchriders before landing and making their delivery. This made their arrival at about 15:50.

He had barely gotten unloaded from that when his next task came to him. This one was going to take a little longer. The man was looking to take a rather nice statue to Aurora Hold in exchange for something there. Naturally, this meant his passenger wanted to tag along for the ride. Quickly he had Rik contact K'let's dragon to have the man come help.

When the bluerider showed up, he explained the situation and before long they were off, pausing long enough to let Ashendale know they were leaving. The time was roughly 16:05 before they made if off with everything that needed to be done. Once logged out they headed for the hold. Naturally, when they got there there were a few hiccups and as such they were gone until 17:06. When they arrived, they logged it with whoever had taken over at the watchtowers before hurrying over to the visualization practice portion of the day. A'lo quickly apologized to H'lee when they arrived.

--

The second day, A'lo found himself with a few odds and ends jobs that didn't have him leaving the academy. They were mostly, "help move this over there. and can you lift this for me." type jobs. Some of which Rikraketh sat on the sidelines and watched. However, around 16:00 the lad had his next errand that had him leaving the grounds. It was his second job that was just carrying some random supplies to a holding nearby. His passenger didn't want to tag along, and as such he headed off on his own. The time they left was 16:10, and they returned by 16:30. They spent the last half hour helping a few crafters before getting pulled away for their next task of the day... which gave Rik some time to rest.

--

The third day, was far more flying. He had ended up calling K'let to help him once more as a man wanted to go with his finished masterpiece to some nearby holding where they waited for him to cut his deal. Naturally, this had them checking out of the weyr by 15:07. They quickly unloaded and A'lo took off, leaving the man with the messenger dragon and rider. Quite honestly, they already knew the most that would be getting transported back was a few marks... and that could be done by the other beast. They arrived back around 15:36, and found themselves with another crafter wanting them to take something somewhere. Quickly they took off around 15:42, dropping the item off at a Snowy Hold and returning by 16:04.

By that point, K'let had returned and they found themselves with another job where both were needed. A'lo once more loaded up his beast before having the woman involved get on K'let's dragon. Before long, they were off and ripping, quickly heading over to Aurora Hold where they finished the task. The two of them had left around 16:12 and returned by 16:46, only to have to run out quickly to a holding with their last customer of the day. They left around 16:50, hoping to make it to the small holding nearby with enough time. Sadly, they didn't return until 17:10... and rushed off to their next lesson to apologize and continue their duty.

--

The fourth day was more jobs around the academy. In fact, he didn't have someone ask him to leave the academy until roughly 16:30 when someone wanted them to move some furnature to Snowy Hold. Once they got all loaded up, they left around 16:45... and just about missed all of their visualization lesson as result, not returning until 17:30..

--

Lucky for him, the last few days was all work around the academy, and he made it to the rest of his lessons on time. All while grumbling to his dragon about how NO one seemed to understand that they had to be on time for their lessons..

K'so

K'so and Qancith realized, after a day on their new duties, that the sweepriding had been an easy job. The first thing they were recruited to do on 2558.11.26 at 15:39 was carry a load of grains from the river basin up to the support structures to be threshed for the Farmers. It was one of the last loads of the harvest. Since they weren't actually leaving the Academy, they didn't need to check in with the Watchriders. As a sort of follow-up task at 16:01, one of the Farmers and a large load of fruit were to be transported to Aurora Hold for shipping to Benden; fruit, unlike grains, couldn't always be safely transported between to their destination. As much as he disliked D'rick, he had to use the greenrider to transport the Farmer while he and Qancith hauled the packs of fruit. Upon their return at 16:51, one of the Weyrlingmasters asked K'so and Qancith for help getting a new couch up into his weyr.

On 2558.11.27, the first transport task they were asked about they begged to schedule at the end of their shift; after his argument that they would need a bath afterward, the steward agreed. So instead, they first accompanied a crew out to the glaciers to cut blocks of ice and haul them back to the Academy for installation into the cold storage chambers, leaving at 15:49 and returning at 16:17 with a passenger in tow on another dragon who had been recruited for the task. They then spent a few minutes delivering sacks of cleaned laundry to the riders' and weyrlings' weyrs. Finally, they reported back to the steward who had approached them that morning and helped shovel then lug sacks of compost and...other things...from the midden down to the fields to be spread and leach nutrients into the soil over the winter, replenishing them for spring planting.

Their third day, 2558.11.28, they were called upon to transport a load of fresh fish from a ship offshore of Snowy Hold to the Academy; they left at 15:20 and returned at 15:55. Then they were off to the Academy quarries to haul back a particularly large and heavy piece of stone that one of the local masons wanted for sculpting (having sent his most recent piece off with A'lo for trade). At 16:15, they made a run to Snowy Hold with ice for their cold storage rooms, returning at 16:55.

On 2558.11.29, their fourth day, they were off on another ice run at 15:05, this time to Aurora Hold, but the ice had to be specially packed for the flight since this would be used by the Healers. Shortly after they got back at 15:48, one of the junior weyrling dragons was injured during a game of blind man's bluff in the bowl and Qancith was enlisted to help carry the younger dragon back to his weyr to recuperate. He'd brought back a load of raw lumber bound for Snowy Hold, which had been delivered to Aurora Hold, and after clearing it with the Watchriders, left at 16:09 to deliver the wood and returned at 16:37.

By their fifth day (2558.11.30), the pair were quite ready to call it quits. This time, one of the Academy Stewards accompanied him, on D'rick's Haranth, to Aurora Hold on a shopping spree. They collected a myriad of small items that K'so couldn't see the use for and hauled them back to the Academy. That took most of their allotted shift, leaving at 15:24 (the Steward hadn't been quite ready) and not returning until 16:44. But their day wasn't quite done as they were instructed, after depositing the load of goods among the houses, to carry the raw metals the Steward had purchased for the smiths down to the smithy near the falls.

Finally, it was their last day, 2558.12.01. It seemed that folks decided to be nice to them and allow them to stay in the Academy all day. First, they helped raise the main beam for a new barn that the Herders were frantically trying to finish before temperatures started incurring frostbite on the wherry flocks. Next they hauled loads of firewood up to each of the Watchtowers to refill the bins already emptied twice since autumn had arrived. Earlier in the day, a long-awaited shipment had been delivered a-dragonback: windows for those Watchtowers to help keep them warm. They hadn't been designed with windows because the original design included a drum tower; now that they had radios, which wouldn't cause the windows to rattle and possibly shatter, they could enclose the towers with glass and make them more hospitable.
