At lunchtime, H'lee rounded up his weyrlings and told them about their new duties, also known as "weyrling duties," tasks which were designed to strengthen their abilities as dragon/rider partners.

"The fourth duty is Sweepriding. You and your dragon will be assigned a quadrant to overfly. You will watch for weather changes, folk on the ground, signs of anyone in need of assistance, and so forth. You may also be flagged down to deliver messages back to me."

K'so and N'sir were assigned to the first shift (13:00-15:00). D'rick and Z'vier were assigned to the second shift (15:00-17:00).

The Assignment:
You're assigned a quadrant, one of four, to overfly. Below is a number of events for you to make note of (these occur over the course of six days); you may expand on the details of the events, but need to make note of each item to report to H'lee upon your return. Make sure to check out with all three Watchriders and note your destination, time of departure, and expected time of return.

K'so
  • Quadrant: West toward Aurora Hold
  • Number of weather changes: 5
  • Number of wildlife sightings: 12
  • Number of people sightings: 6 (2 flag-downs for messages, 1 flag-down for assistance)

N'sir
  • Quadrant: East toward Snowy Hold
  • Number of weather changes: 6
  • Number of wildlife sightings: 11
  • Number of people sightings: 9 (4 flag-downs for messages, 1 flag-down for assistance)

D'rick
  • Quadrant: South over the ocean
  • Number of weather changes: 2
  • Number of wildlife sightings: 4
  • Number of people sightings: 3 (1 flag-downs for messages)

Z'vier
  • Quadrant: North over the glaciers
  • Number of weather changes: 4
  • Number of wildlife sightings: 7
  • Number of people sightings: 3 (1 flag-downs for messages, 1 flag-down for assistance)

K'so
K'so and Qancith were, for their first week of weyrling duties, assigned to sweepride the western quadrant, out toward Aurora Hold. On their first flight on 2558.11.19, logged with Artemis and the other two Watchriders at 13:11 with a destination of the western quadrant and an expected return time of 14:45, the pair mulled over why they were doing this at all. With Thread no longer a threat, they were allowed to sweepride alone - but without Thread, what was the point of sweepriding?

However, when they were flagged down by a holder at 14:25 on their pass back toward the Academy, the reasoning became more apparent: not all holders had firelizards or lived near enough a Hold to have easy access to a dragonrider to convey messages. This holder had his tithe to be made to Aurora Hold; his access road had washed out and he was unable to deliver it himself until the road was repaired, and could K'so kindly ask for some help with his road? Qancith grumbled about being used for Messenger Duty when they were on sweepride, but then K'so pointed out that part of the delayed tithe were herdbeasts. Of course, they couldn't help transport that part of the tithe, but they duly reported the incident to H'lee upon their return at 14:35.

Their second day (2558.11.20), they were a bit late getting started and didn't take off until 13:17, intending to return at 14:50. As they swept out, they noticed a storm brewing on the horizon at 13:20; Qancith relayed this information immediately to Jadziath. At 13:44, they spotted a flock of wild wherries along the coast; K'so was surprised, given that winter was almost upon them and the wild wherries didn't hang around as the snows closed in over the beaches. At 14:30, he stopped to let the holder know that a repair crew had been dispatched and should arrive the following day to repair his road. They returned at 14:40.

Their third day (2558.11.21) at 13:01 they took off in the stormy weather that they'd spotted the previous day, planning to return at 14:50. At 13:24, they spotted what was probably the same flock of wherries as the day before, winging their way southward at last. Shortly thereafter at 13:28, they saw a lightening in the sky, indicating an end to the storm was on its way; again, Qancith reported this to Jadziath. A second wildlife sighting, a large flock of the small, drab sparrow-type birds that frequented northern climes in the winter, occurred at 13:35. And finally, a pod of dolphins at 13:43, a sighting that made both dragon and rider snort with amusement as the creatures appeared to be cavorting and just plain enjoying themselves. They returned at 14:40.

Their fourth day (2558.11.22) was clear, but quite cold as the pair launched at 13:04 with an estimated return time of 14:50. K'so cursed at the ominous darkening to the northwest that they spotted at 13:15, figuring it probably meant more foul weather on the way, and instructed Qancith to relay it to Jadziath again. Moments later at 13:33, he was flagged down by a fellow on the beach; the man had spotted a large school of fish and could K'so please notify Aurora Hold right away so that the fishing fleet and their dolphins could help harvest them? He and Qancith winged as swiftly as possible to the Hold and dispatched the message and rested for a bit while they watched the fleet swing northward in answer to the call. They returned to the Academy at 14:32 with a message that the Academy was welcome to a portion of the catch when the fleet returned that evening.

Their fifth day out (2558.11.23) dawned clear and cold again, although the weather warmed throughout the day; it seemed the storm they'd seen the previous day had passed north of them. Near the same place they'd encountered the fisherman the day before, they saw the fleet was out again at 13:36 and it appeared they were making a good haul. A few of the sailors waved at them as they flew over, but no indication was made that they should come any closer, so the blue pair continued on down. As they approached Aurora Hold at 14:17, they spotted what looked to be another storm brewing on the horizon. They turned inland and spotted another flock of waterfowl at 14:34, then noticed a single wherry at 14:35 which appeared to be hunting the waterfowl. A few minutes later, at 14:38, they saw a single individual on his holding, apparently coming in from milking the herdbeasts. They returned to the Academy at 14:53, letting Jadziath know they would be a couple minutes late when they realized they weren't going to be early for a change.

On their final day (2558.11.24), the storm that he'd spotted the previous afternoon was pounding down on them with heavy rains. It was absolutely miserable when they left the Academy at 13:08, hoping to return by 14:30. They could barely see anything and stayed close to the ground to avoid the buffeting winds. Both dragon and rider muttered to each other about how ridiculous it was that they were out in this kind of weather - at least until at 13:31 they encountered the young boy who had become trapped by a flash flood on a boulder that would soon be under water. The herd of goats he'd been tending, which Qancith had spotted at 13:27, apparently had more sense than he'd had and were bleating unhappily on a ridge; they were even more distressed by the appearance of a dragon, seemingly out of nowhere. Qancith, please show Seeth the problem. I don't know how to get him off of that rock safely! The blue relayed the urgent message to their Weyrlingmaster's brown dragon and moments later, H'lee and T'lon arrived. Qancith and K'so watched from a short distance away as the pair maneuvered in and plucked the boy off the boulder, then the blue and bronze herded the goats carefully toward the holding, which wasn't too far, but far enough that the goats, disoriented by the flooding, had not returned home on their own. Roth instructed the pair to finish their sweep. As they coasted away from the holding at 13:41, they spotted several tunnel snakes making a meal of something in the water, although they couldn't make out what the unfortunate prey was. Minutes later, to their relief, the wind let up and the skies to the south and west started clearing - they exited the worst of the storm at 13:45 and notified Seeth, Roth, and Jadziath. As the blue pair winged wearily toward home, they saw worms that had crawled out of the now-drenched soil to avoid drowning (14:30) and in the next valley, which had been dry a bit longer than the first, a number of avians making a meal of the exposed worms (14:47). They practically crash-landed in the Academy at 14:54.

A'lo

Their second week, they had found themselves drawing sweeprider duty. A'lo had found he enjoyed the time with his bronze, although he still worried about D'rick from time to time, he did find himself getting better with it all the time. Quite honestly, after walking in on everyone being in his sister's weyr and hearing the announcement that his twin sister was getting married... well, he wasn't sure what he thought. The alone time helped him to process and move along.

~I don't know what to think about this, Rik.. What if he hurts her?~ he questioned his bronze as they flew towards the ocean. Along the way he had his bronze alert Jadziath that they were heading out, and the time was 15:00.

Rikraketh passed the news along to the green before flying lazily over the land. All the while he kept an eye out for anything usual. ~Why would he hurt his mate?~ the beast asked, severely confused over his bonded's annoyance. Quite frankly, he accepted that Jadziath's and Haranth's were mated, even if he did not understand it.

~Because... he's done nothing but hurt her so far,~ A'lo tried to defend, ~I mean, he got Arty pregnant. And if things had gone wrong then she could have lost Jazz. And now he's going to marry her. If H'lee found out, he would have a heart attack and she would never graduate!~

The bronze snorted in response before glancing towards the ground. ~Mine, there is something below,~ the beast pointed out. Below there was a group of some sort of animals.

All in all, nothing else of interst happened the first day. They returned at 16:56, pausing to pass on the note of his sighting to H'lee.

--

On day two, they left at 15:00 once more, pausing to talk to Artemis for a second before flying towards the ocean. Naturally, it was another day of talking between themselves, mostly of Artemis and D'rick again, and then Rik asked his bonded if he had someone he wanted to mate with. Of course, that left the bronzerider spluttering. "What!!?" he yelped at the bronze, verbally. He hadn't had the presence of mind to keep that mental.

The bronze rumbled his amusement, and as they reached the ocean, he pointed out a pod of dolphins that were swimming nearby. It caused a slight shift in topic as they discussed what it would be like to know the strange "fish". Regardless, before long they were distracted by another sighting of someone wandering along the beach.

As with the day before, they arrived back at the academy by 16:56, reporting their sightings to H'lee.

--

The third day was rather eventful as far as he was concerned. Once more they were on their way at 15:00 and before they even reached the ocean they had spotted a feline, some wherries and a herdbeast that had managed to get away. When they reached the ocean, there was another pod of dolphins playing in the water nearby.

They spent the entire time visiting, making comments on each sighting before A'lo shivvered. Clearly a nice little storm was on it's way. In fact, by 16:30 A'lo was drenched by the rainfall. When they returned, they reported their findings and A'lo went to his weyr so that he could change into dry clothes. "Ugh, that was COLD," he grumbled to himself. He had arrived by 16:49.

--

The fourth, fifth, and sixth days were pretty well the same. Both days he left by 15:00 and seen absolutely nothing. Instead, they flew around for two hours and conversed about random things, building their friendship more. Although, at one point they did start discussing the idea of Artemis getting a holding from D'rick's grandparents. They returned by 16:58 on both days, reporting to H'lee that they had seen absolutely nothing.
