Name: H'lee
Age: 35
Do you have a dragon? Yes.
Why do you want to be a dragonhealer?
As a youth, I didn't think I would Impress, but I grew up around dragons and wanted to be as close to them as a non-rider possibly could be. So I chose to learn dragonhealing to be near them.

Name one thing firelizards have that firedragonets also have:
Three rear toes (not claws).

Name one herb and describe what it looks like:
Aloe: grows in a cluster or rosette; the leaves are waxy and lance-shaped with a jagged edge. The flower grows on a central stem and each blossom is tubular and varies in color from orange to red to yellow.

Name one minor ailment (i.e., a scrape, cut, illness, etc.) and how it would be treated:
Sunburn: coat gently and regularly with an aloe lotion.

Name one thing firelizards have that firedragonets do NOT have:
Five toes, including a thumb-type finger, on the front feet.

Name one medicinal plant and describe what it looks like:
Redwort: grows in low-lying clumps and is reddish hue, owing to the veins in the stems. Flowers are flat and either purple or pink.

Briefly describe one aspect of midwifery:
Childbirth is extremely painful; women often request painkillers ahead of time. Painkillers have to be administered carefully so as to not affect the infant or the muscle contractions required to delivery the baby.

Name one thing dragons have that firedragonets also have:
Neck ridges.

Describe what the herb you chose above is used for:
Aloe is primarily used for treating burns.

Briefly describe a common weyrling dragonet ailment and how to treat it:
Tongue-bites are usually best treated with a small dab of red willow salve, just large enough to cover the surface of the bite. Severe bites may require stitches.

Name one thing dragons have that firedragonets do NOT have:
Flatter muzzles.

Describe what the medicinal plant you chose above is used for:
Redwort is best known for its ability to protect the skin from being affected by numbweed; it is also a natural antiseptic.

Describe one attitude toward suicide:
Although not encouraged, it is generally expected that riders who lose their dragons frequently suicide.

Describe one of the things Kitti Ping and her assistants and granddaughters did when engineering the dragons and why they made that alteration:
They increased and strengthened the muscles of the rear legs to allow for comfortable upright sitting, launches, and landings.

Name one important thing to do before treating any draconic injury:
Reassure the rider (if possible) and obtain his or her assistance with restraining the dragon.

Describe one injury that may occur during a Hatching and how to treat it:
Cuts from eggshells should be lightly dabbed with numbweed and, if required, stitched.

Describe one physical aspect of whers and how they differ from firedragonets, firelizards, and dragons:
Whers wings are too small to provide flight.

Describe one illness that a dragon can contract and how to treat it:
Food poisoning, which should be treated primarily by keeping the dragon hydrated. Addition of apple vinegar often helps alleviate symptoms.

Describe one injury that may occur during flight and how to treat it:
A common injury during flights include pulled muscles. A willow ointment is the most effective treatment, applied directly to the strained muscle and rubbed in firmly before oiling.

Describe the evolution of the dragons and the how the white dragon, Ruth, fits in:
Dragons have maintained the normal colors as they've evolved, although the variation in color has increased due to shorter lifespans and increased genetic variation. Ruth's hide contains multiple colors, including those that are not traditional draconic colors.

Describe an injury that may occur during firestone training and how to treat it:
Swallowing a flame may occur. Cold water and meat are used to treat the injury, first to cool the damaged tissue, then to trigger the production of saliva to coat the injury.

Describe one injury that may occur during mating flights and how to treat it:
Bruises are a frequent injury as males compete with each other and try to embarrass each other. A lotion containing a mild painkiller, such as aconite or adonis, should be administered to the bruise prior to oiling.

Describe the growth rate of dragonets and one of the physiological changes that occurs during growth:
Dragons grow exceedingly fast for their first 9 months; near the end of this time, they go through a phase that could be equated to human puberty. The male dragonets become interested in the females, and vice versa. They've been exposed to close contact with their riders, but not as much with other dragons.

Describe an injury that may be incurred by going between and how to treat it:
Frostbite can be incurred by the cold of between. Such injuries should be warmed by being immersed in cold water which is gradually warmed. The injury should be coated with numbweed for the pain and aloe lotion to moisturize. Dead tissue should be trimmed off before the application of numbweed or lotion.

Describe one injury that may occur during Threadfall and how to treat it:
Threadscore to a limb is most common. A score on a leg will often be deep and should be coated with numbweed for the pain and an infusion of dragon's tongue and comfrey after the dead tissue is trimmed away. If possible, the injury should be stitched and otherwise left open to the air.

How does a Dragonhealer fit into Weyr society?
The highest-ranked Dragonhealer in the Weyr may challenge the authority of the Weyrwoman or Weyrleader in health-related matters, particularly if one of those people is not in good health. Dragonhealers in general have the final say over any rider in the Weyr when it comes to health-related matters.

What are your plans now, having attained Mastery?
Having attained my Mastery after Impressing Seeth, I will remain in the Weyr and devote my knowledge and services to maintaining the health of the dragons. If Thread is eradicated, I will remain at the Weyr.
