Arrow Lake

Arrow Lake is one of the largest lakes on the atoll and looks like an arrow pointing north. It is the third lake on the northern branch of the Springs and empties into the same delta that Bean Lake empties into.

Barracks

The weyrling barracks are located on the eastern end of the first tier inside the caldera. There are two rows of barracks; the first is at ground level for weyrlings who have not yet passed their flying lessons, and the second is located above for weyrlings who have passed their flying lessons and can take upper-level weyrs. The junior weyrling barracks are single level so that the younger riders will be in closer contact with their dragons while their bonds strengthen. The senior weyrling barracks have two levels, the dragon chambers and a second level of living quarters for the riders.

Bathing Pools

The weyrling bathing pools are a trio of shallow pools centered on top of the first tier in the caldera. The uppermost pool is the shallowest; it is fed directly from the Upper Spring on the rim of the Weyr and is where the youngest weyrlings are instructed to bathe their dragons until they get larger. The second pool is filled by overflow from the first pool; it's deeper than the first one and is where most of the weyrlings bathe their dragons. The third pool is fed mostly from the first, but some runoff from the Upper Spring also spills into it; it's the deepest and is mostly used by adult dragons who have injuries that shouldn't get wet. The pools are accessed by a slope leading up the center of the first tier. Runoff from the pools pours over the edge of the first tier to the east of the access slope and feeds into Crater Lake.

Bean Lake

Bean Lake is the smallest of the lakes in the Springs and the fourth lake on the southern branch. It's fed by Long Lake and empties into a delta.

Boot Lake

The second-smallest of the Outer Lakes, so named because it looks like a boot when viewed from above. It is filled by runoff from Trio Lake by way of Marsh Lake and empties into Double Lake.

Candidate Barracks

The candidate barracks are located on the lower floor south of the Great Hall. The barracks chamber is co-ed, but each suite is gender-specific and houses three candidates. Female candidate suites are to the west of the staircase; male suites are to the east. Candidates who are married live with their spouses in their apartments; only single candidates are housed in the barracks.

Cistern Lake

Cistern Lake is the uppermost of the three Inner Lakes, positioned near the rim on the southeast side of the caldera. It is fed in part by rain water, but also from the cold springs that fill Trio Lake. It empties into Kettle Lake on the floor of the crater. It is also used to provide much of the running water for the Weyr because its elevation can gravity-feed the plumbing system.

Coral Harbor

The central harbor, Coral Harbor is so named for the ring of coral reef protecting the entrance to the harbor. It can only be safely accessed by boat at high tide, and even then only ships with a shallow draft. It provides above-ground foot access to the Weyr, but there are no exterior entrances into the Weyr - the only way in from this direction is with climbing gear.

Crater Lake

Crater Lake is the larger of the two ground-level Inner Lakes. It is fed by Kettle Lake and runoff from the Bathing Pools. It empties through crevices in the caldera wall to the Rain Pools marsh flats.

Double Harbor

Double Harbor is the southern harbor, named because of the two lobes. Like Coral Harbor, it is only accessible by boat at high tide, only due to rocks rather than coral and it is surrounded by 50-foot cliffs. Courtesy of the Rain Pools which create a marshy environment above the harbor, whose runoff pours over the cliffs, the harbor provides an estuarine habitat and is really quite enjoyable to rest in.

Hatching Grounds

The Hatching Grounds are a large cavern on the south side of the caldera. It also serves as part of the gold riders' weyrs (and their mates' weyrs), as it has openings to a dozen multi-chambered apartments. Sand was hauled in by H'lee and the other adult riders who timed it forward when Learyam helped them find the island. The sands are warmed partly by the sun beating down on the stone around the cavern and partly by a hot-spot from the volcano that formed the island. The air in the cavern averages about 95 degrees and the sands are about 80 degrees.

Hidden Harbor

Hidden Harbor is the northern-most harbor and isn't readily obvious. It also has the narrowest entrance of the three harbors. It can be accessed by a galleon, but only at high tide; other boats with a shallower draft can enter at any time, although great care has to be taken during low tide. A second bay inside the main harbor can completely conceal any visiting ships from view outside the harbor entrance. 450-foot-tall inner walls open into an underground cavern, similar to the one at Half Circle Seahold, allowing ships to be moved inside, out of Thread-harm's way, and provides the only ground-level interior access to the Weyr.

Infirmary

The Infirmary is located in the main wall of the caldera, south of the eastern end of the first tier. There are multiple levels, but the ground level is reserved for injured dragons and their riders. Each infirmary apartment has a room near the outer wall with a window and an interior room. Behind the interior room is a hallway connecting the apartments; there are also some rooms interior to the hallways used for storage and offices.

The Island

The Island is located off the western edge of the atoll. It's only 150 feet tall at its highest point and about 20 acres in size. Its proximity to the atoll wall creates a vicious tidal effect in the space between the island in the wall, resulting in a perpetual mist in the area. There are a few scraggly trees and some undergrowth on the upper level, but the salt from the ocean spray and mist create an inhospitable environment for most plant life.

Lower Caverns

The main walls and the tiers of the caldera are riddled with caverns that are either naturally connected or have been connected by masons. Most of the non-rider Weyrfolk live in apartments that share at least one wall with the exterior so they have a window.

Lower Spring

Lower Spring is the second lake in the Springs. It is fed both by Upper Spring and by several additional hot- and cold-water springs, and empties into both Long Lake and Arrow Lake. It's too warm for most uses, but the Healers often retrieve the beneficial hot water from there to fill bathtubs in the Infirmary for those who can't make the trek to the Bathing Pools.

Marsh Lake

The smallest of the Outer Lakes, fed by Trio Lake and empties into Boot Lake. The high levels of runoff cause some seeping into the surrounding area, resulting in a marshy border to the lake.

Rain Pools Marsh Flats

The Rain Pools Marsh Flats cover most of the southern exterior of the volcanic atoll. There are a number of pits in the volcanic rocks that periodically fill with water, mostly from rain but also overflow from Crater Lake. They empty into Double Harbor.

The Tower

The Tower is one of the few outcroppings on the walls of the caldera. It's just below the rim on the east side and is essentially 800 feet of sheer cliff with a 20-acre field on top. A shelter has been built on top to allow the miniature mesa to be used as a watchtower.

Upper Spring

Upper Spring is a combination hot- and cold-water spring. The waters mix in the lake and are somewhat warmer than is comfortable for humans. By the time they reach the bathing pools, enough heat is leached out that it's comfortable. Additional overflow runs off into Lower Spring.

Weyrs

The rider weyrs are arrayed along the western and northern cliffs in the caldera. The weyrs all have multiple rooms, but some are laid out horizontally and some are vertical. There are multiple levels of weyrs on each of the two tiers and in the rim.
