Silvara
Moderator / Master Healer
First Year Apprentice:
The Clavicle also known as the Collar bone. This bone is considered one of the long bone’s of the body though it is of short length. It serves as a strut between the scapula and the sternum. It is the only long bone in the body that lies horizontally. This bone connects the arm to the body and is located directly above the first rib. It acts as a strut to keep the scapula in position so the arm can hang freely. Allowing for the rang of motion that is so useful for humans.

Filipendula Ulmaria, commonly known as Meadowsweet, is a perennial herb in the family Rosaceae that grows in damp meadows. The stems are 1-2 Meters (3-7 ft) tall, erect and furrowed, reddish to sometimes purple. The leaves are dark-green on the upper side and whitish and downy underneath, much divided, interruptedly pinnate, having a few large serrated leaflets and small intermediate ones. The whole plant is a traditional remedy for an acidic stomach, and the fresh root is often used in infinitesimal quantities in homeopathic preparations. A small section of root, when peeled and crushed, and when chewed is a good natural remedy for reliving headaches.

Obstetrics is the medical specialty dealing with the care of all female reproductive tracts and their children during pregnancy, childbirth and the postnatal period.

A splint is one medical tool used by healers to help bind broken limbs in proper alignment so the bones and soft tissues can heal properly so the bone and connecting tissues can healer properly.

Second Year Apprentice:
The deltoid muscle is the muscle forming the rounded contour of the shoulder. Anatomically, it appears to be made up of three distinct sets of fibers though electromyography suggests that it consists of at least seven groups that can be independently coordinated by the central nervous system. The three sets of fibers are: Anterior fibers: from the most of anterior border and upper surface of lateral third of the clavicle. Lateral Fibers: from the lateral aspect of the acromion. And Posterior Fibers: from the lower lip of the posterior boarder of the spine of the scapula, as far back as the triangular surface at its medical end.

Meadowsweet is an excellent digestive remedy. It protects and soothes the mucous membranes of the digestive tract, reducing excess acidity and alleviating nausea, and can be used in the treatment of heartburn, hyperacidity, gastritis and peptic ulceration. It can be either chewed or brewed into a tea though it loses a little of its potency when brewed. The anti-inflammatory action of the salicylates in Meadowsweet makes it effective against rheumatic pain while the tannins and mucilages appear to buffer the adverse effects of isolated salicylates which can cause gastric bleeding. The astringent tannins make Meadowsweet a useful remedy in the treatment of diarrhoea in children.

A laceration to the leg. A lacerations are irregular tear-like wound caused by some blunt trauma. Lacerations and incisions may appear linear (Regular) or stellate (Irregular). The term laceration is commonly misused in reference to incisions. The first step is to clean the injury to gage if it is only skin deep vs. a deeper injury. Once clean some sort of binding to close the wound depending on its severity can involve stitches or just a light bandage. After that it is good to keep it clean and to ensure that it does not become infected but should heal within a few days otherwise.

The cervix will dilate which will allow the child to move out of the uterus and into the vaginal canal to then be born.

Third Year Apprentice:
The deltoid is innervated by the axillary nerve. This nerve supplies not just the deltoid but also rotator cuff and elbow. This nerve carries sensory information from the shoulder joint and surrounding area to the brain.

Follow your healer’s instructions but the dosage is roughly three times per day either one cup or one small root to be chewed.

Height and weight are routinely checked during normal examinations of children to gage how well the child is growing and if the growth is proceeding along normal expectations.

A clavicle fracture is a bone fracture in the clavicle or collarbone. It is often caused by a fall onto an outstretched upper extremity, either to the shoulder of the clavicle directly. Treatment usually involves resting the affected extremity and supporting the arm with a sling of sorts. A figure-8 brace is used and is designed to immobilize and retract the shoulder, maintaining symmetric positioning to facilitate healing. Healing time varies based on age, health, and the complexity and location of the break as well as the bone displacement. For adults a minimum of 3-4 weeks of sling immobilization is normally needed to allow the bone and soft tissue to heal. In teens and children this time is slightly less.

Fourth Year Apprentice:
The lung is the essential respiration organ in many air-breathing creatures. Their principal function is to transport oxygen from the atmosphere into the bloodstream, and to release carbon dioxide from the bloodstream into the atmosphere.

Tetanus (Also known as Lockjaw) An illness which is characterized by progressive muscle spasms usually starting in the jaw (Reason for the other name) and elsewhere in the body. Tetanus often begins with mild spasms in the jaw muscles. The spasms can also affect the chest, neck, back, and abdominal muscles.

Silvara moved into the supply room looking around for the bandages the Healing master sent her to fetch. Soon finding the bandages she moved out the door and around the corner focused on getting back to the master quickly as it would not do to keep him waiting when suddenly she found herself colliding with one of the other weyrling cadets, Sika. Sika looked up at Silvara trying to stifle tears even as Silvara took in the sight of the other realizing that she was hurt. Sika’s knees were raw and bleeding slightly and she had a minor abrasion on her right forearm which she was holding to her chest. All looked to have come from a fall most likely on one of the many stone stair cases in the weyr. At that point Silvara’s healer training kicked in as she gently took Sika in hand glad that she had all ready grabbed the bandages for Master Tikal before running into Sika. Soon they arrived at the healing hall were Silvara guides Sika to one of the cots to sit before running over to Tikal to drop off the bandages and then to grab a dish of clean water and numbweed as well as a few of the smaller bandages to use on Sika. With care Silvara set to work washing out the other girls injuries to make sure they would not get infected then slathering a very fine amount of the numbweed balm onto them before placing the bandages in place to keep anything else from getting in. All the while Sika watched closely calming down and glad that she had gone looking for Silvara knowing her from weyrling lessons. Neither aware of Master Tikal watching the interactions to gage how well Silvara was coming along in her training in this part of the healing craft well aware of her aversion to physical contact with others.

First Year Journeyman:
Connective tissues are fibrous tissues. They are made up of cells separated by non-living material, which is called extracellular matrix. Connective tissue gives shape to organs and holds them in place. Both blood and bone are examples of connective tissue. As the name implies, connective tissue serves a "connecting" function. It supports and binds other tissues. Unlike epithelial tissue, connective tissue typically has cells scattered throughout an extracellular matrix.

Massage is the working of superficial and deeper layers of muscle and connective tissue using various techniques, to enhance function, aid in the healing process, and promote relaxation and well-being. This in turn can be used to help relax or calm these muscles to a state which can relive headaches, back aches, chest pains, and several other issues related to muscle tension and over extention.

The sun sparkled off dew covered grass as the Weyrlings formed up standing next to their dragons. Today was going to be the first time they would actually get to get on and rider their dragons even if it was only to be a few feet off the ground. Silvara looked around feeling a little nervous since she had all ready been up and in the healing hall helping set things up and listening to the stories from the older healers about how they dreaded this day as it always seemed to end with at least one Weryling with a bone or two broken if not multiple Weyrlings. Silv’s eyes flickered over to where Sika was with her green. A little worry running around in the back of her mind knowing that if any of them was likely to get hurt it would be Sika. Soon though she was caught up in the excitement as the Weyrling master called out for them to mount up as it were and soon she was on the back of Warellith and feeling like a real dragon rider. Things seemed to be going smoothly when a cry of surprise could be heard off to one side. Looking that way Silv saw what she had feared: Sika falling off her dragon though the young woman desperately grabbed for the riding strap she still ended up slamming first into the side of her dragon making a rather unnerving snapping sound before falling to the ground a few feet below. Warrellith landed quickly letting Silvara down knowing that as the healer in the group she needed to get to Sika first. Skidding to a stop next to Sika, Silvara knelt down gently helping the girl to lie on her back before starting her examination. With no small relief she found that other then being shaken up and some bruising Sika had only broken one of the Radius in the fore arm and that the break was clean and had not broken the skin. Taking a slow and stready breath Silv spoke to Sika. “It’s going to be all right Sika. You have broken one of the bones in your arm but I am going to set it then splint it. What I need you to do is just breath and try and relax as much as you can. Here bite down on this.” At those words Silv gave Sika a bite bone from her med kit for the other to hold in her teeth while Silv sett he bone. She was so very glad that she had brought her med kit with her just in case. With a popping sound she soon had the bone in line once more and was quickly binding it with the light splint in her kit knowing that once back at the healing hall a stronger cast would be made to make sure the bone would stay in place while it healed. Standing up slowly Silvara helped Sika to her feet turning to look to where the Weyrling Master was to see what his instructions would be though guessing they were something along the lines of take her to the healers. “Silvara as you seem to have her well in hand take her to the Healers then return to finish the lesson though you looked good from what I saw before Sika fell. Now shoo.” The master flicked his hands at them in a shooing motion before turning back to the other Weyrlings and growling at them to get back on their dragons and to be more careful about keeping their balance as well as remembering that the straps are there to be held onto from the start not just when you feel like it. Silv just smirked at the words as she guided Sika away from the Field and in towards the Weyr’s Healing Hall.

Second Year Journeyman:
Major depressive disorder is a mental disorder characterized by an all-encompassing low mood accompanied by low self-esteem, and by loss of interest or pleasure in normally enjoyable activities.

Silvara was in the Healing hall going over some reports on different cases that had happened in other weyrs and halls recently as a reading assignment from Master Tikal. So when she heard hard coughing and the scuff of feet she startled a little looking up and over to the main entry to the Hall. There stood one of the Bronze riders from the Hatching before hers. She had seen him a few times before but still had no idea what his name was. She was also surprised to see him here as he was one of those who always thought that he was indestructible and the first shells gift to the ladies. He HATED showing any sign of weakness especially in front of a female. Standing she moved over to where he was leaning against the wall looking rather miserable. “Can I help you? You don’t look so good. Come sit on one of the cots so I can get a better look at you.” He blinked at her before nodding slightly and shuffling over to the cot with her looking much like something even a flit would not drag in. Once seated Silvara smirked slightly realizing that from what she could tell from the coughing and slightly labored breathing that he seemed to have gotten the flu. She gently pushed him to lay on his side while grabbing a bucket from near by just in case he was one of those who also got nausea when ill with the flu. “Ugbleg… why does my head feel like some one has dropped a dragon on it?” He asked in a rather pitiful voice looking up at her with one eye blearily. She smiled softly to reassure him moving to get his boots off and to settle him on the cot properly before tucking a blanket around him. “That’s the flu talking. It’s what you get from not taking better care of yourself. Considering I bet you got this while up north playing in the snow with Rita.” She smirked slightly before going and getting a dish of cold fresh water and a rag to place on his head. “You will be all right in a few days. For now sleep and I won’t tell anyone that you were here.” He blinked at her blushing faintly at her first words before nodding looking rather meek after realizing he had just shown himself to be a big baby when sick. He was just glad that she was taking pity on him and was not about to go tell the entire Weyr that he was sick with the flu. “Thanks Silv, that means a lot.” She blinked slightly surprised that he knew her short name but just nodded before heading to the side of the hall where everything for making tea was, knowing that he would need something warm and soothing in his system. It was not till after she finished getting him to drink the tea and settle into sleep that she turned to find Master Tikal watching her with an approving smile on his lips.

Third Year Journeyman:
Skin Grafting is often used to treat skin loss due to a wound, burn, infection of surgery. In the case of damaged skin, it is removed, and new skin is grafted in its place. Skin grafting can reduce the course of treatment and time spent in the healing hall as well as improve function and appearance.

Some individuals who have been traumatized may feel permanently damaged when trauma symptoms do not go away and they do not believe their situation will improve. This can lead to feelings of despair, loss of self-esteem, and frequently depression. If important aspects of the person’s self and world understanding have been violated, the person may call their own identity into question.

Thread fall had come and gone and now the Healing hall was very much full and busy. It had been one of the harder thread runs due to large winds and a storm brewing off to the east. Silvara shook her head trying to focus on the herbs before her as she was making poultices for the other healers so they could focus on tending to their patients. She was glad that none had died but there were quite a few riders in for being Threadscore. She gently worked a mix of Numbweed, Mosstea, and Redwort for some of the more severely scored riders who thankfully were out cold from heavy draughts of Fellis and wine. Once she had them made up she quickly set them on a tray and moved about the room first over to Master Tikal who was working on the worst case and glad that he had not asked her to help directly with the patient. He knew her Empathic gift made it hard for her to handle patients with sever injuries and few injuries were as sever as Threadscore. Smiling he took what he needed from the tray and pointed to the other resident master telling her nonverbally where to go next. Bowing her head slightly she carefully made her way over to Master Fribly glad that he was more at ease with her now compared to when they had first met. He nodded faintly at her as he also took a few of the poultices and shooed her off. With that she made the rounds of the room delivering the last of the poultices before taking the tray back to the side and moving about to see what else any of the other healers might need fetching as quickly and quietly as possible for the sake of the injured most of whom were dosing or fully asleep. It would not do to wake them which was one of the first lessons that any healer was taught. Slowly things calmed down as the most severely injured were resting peacefully and their injuries tended to and now only needing time to heal. Silvara nearly yelped with a hand landed on her shoulder and she turned to see Master Tikal standing there grinning at her. “You did good today. Though I think you should now go get some food and sleep considering you fought thread for the first half of this day then have been here since landing and the sun has all ready set.” Silv blinked at him owlishly having completely lost track of time since entering the hall just before noon. She blushed and nodded glad that the day was ending and every one would live to fly another day. With that she made her way towards out of the healing hall and off towards food and her own weyr.

Fourth Year Journeyman:
