1 Checkin with Harper Timiny on Sun Jan 22, 2012 10:52 pm

Unlike when they arrive at the Weyr, Candidates are admitted to the Harper Office only by appointment, usually the day after their arrival.

The office isn't the cleanest or most organized location in the Weyr. There are stacks of paper and hides scattered around the room. When the Candidate is admitted, Journeyman Harper Timiny indicates they should sit on a tall stool next to a sand table and he hands them a sheet of paper.

"First, read the text on this page."

Seas boil and mountains move,
Sands heat, dragons prove
Red Star passes.
Stones pile and fires burn
Green withers, arm Pern.
Guard all passes.
Star Stone watch, scan sky.
Ready the Weyrs, all riders fly;
Red Star passes.

Barley is a cereal grain that can be brewed as a tea to combat symptoms of cystitis, which is a common complaint of female dragonriders.

A weaver's-length is the length from nosetip to extended arm fingertip, or approximately one yard.

The Yokohama was commanded by Admiral Paul Benden and carried 2,900 people.

After the Candidate has read - or attempted to read - aloud the top half of the sheet, Harper Timiny instructs them to answer the mathematical questions, indicating the sand table be used for any calculations the Candidate needs to do.

Crust:
  • 1/2 cup butter
  • 2 tablespoons granulated sweetening
  • 2.5 cups flour
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 cup ice water
Filling:
  • 5 cups berries
  • 1 cup granulated sweetening
  • 0.25 teaspoon powdered klah bark
  • 2 teaspoons citrus juice
  • 1-2 tablespoons butter

Given the above ingredients to make one recipe's worth, calculate how much of each ingredient is needed to make:
  1. 1 dozen tarts: requires 2 recipes of crust and filling
  2. Half a dozen Gather-pies: requires a half recipe of crust, a quarter recipe of filling

After the Candidate performs - or attempts to perform - the calculations, Journeyman Timiny instructs the Candidate to transcribe his dictation of the following on the sand table.

Drummer, beat, and piper, blow,
Harper, strike, and soldier, go.
Free the flame and sear the grasses
Till the dawning Red Star passes.

From the Weyr and from the Bowl,
Bronze and brown and blue and green,
Rise the dragonmen of Pern,
Aloft, on wing, seen, then unseen.

Honor those the dragons heed,
In thought and favor, word and deed.
Worlds are lost or worlds are saved
From those dangers dragon-braved.

Dragonman, avoid excess;
Greed will bring the Weyr distress;
To the ancient Laws adhere,
Prospers thus the Dragonweyr.

"Alright, you're good to go. Check in with the Headwoman after supper tonight."

Post your response to the scene in the office, then respond by copying the information above into your post and modifying it to meet your character's education and ability levels. Feel free to describe how your character feels under this brusque interrogation. Most Candidates from the Fort Weyr territory will probably be more literate than those from other Weyr territories because the Harper Hall is located in Fort Hold, but depending on where they grew up (in a larger Hold with an assigned Harper or in a remote cothold with only a passing Journeyman Harper), they may have greater or lesser reading, writing, and arithmetic abilities.

After filling out the tests, a reply will be posted ("from" the Headwoman) indicating whether the Candidate will be taking remedial Harper classes at the Weyr or not.

Kerso had been given a note that morning to report to the Harper Office immediately after breakfast. Upon arrival, he tried not to gawk at the piles of books and papers all around the room; never had he seen so many in one place before. In fact, he'd barely seen papers or books before. But if he was going to be Weyrleader someday, he couldn't be amazed by anything, right?

He hadn't really registered the "Journeyman" in the Headwoman's statement last night, but he recognized the shoulder knot and - again - felt a moment of annoyance. He was more important than that, especially with the Harper Hall so close. However, the Journeyman's brusque manner wiped out any sense of insult. "First, read the text on this page."

Sees boh-ayl and moh-un-tans mov-ee,
San-duhs heet dragons prov-ee Red Star passes.
Stones pil-ee and fir-ees burn gree-en why-thers arm Pern.
Goo-ar-duh all passes.
Star Ston-ee watch scan sky.
Reedy the Weyrs all riders fly Red Star passes.

Barley is a ker-reel grain that can be brew-ed as a tee to combat sy-emp-tahms of kiss-tit-tiz which is a common complant of femal-ee dragonriders.

A weever's-len-guth is the len-guth from noz-ee-type to eksten-ded arm fin-ger-type or app-rocks-y-mayte-lye on-ee yar-duh.

The Yock-o-hay-mah was coh-man-ded by Ad-mire-ale Pah-ool Benden and carry-ed two...nine...ooh pee-ope-lee.

Kerso didn't think he did too badly, considering he'd only had maybe a Turn's worth of Harper training. He wasn't sure what the Journeyman thought. But then, why did he need to know how to read, anyway? What good would it do him?

1 dozen tarts:
2 cup butter
4 tablespoons granulated sweetening
4.5 cups flour
2 teaspoon salt
2 cup ice water
7 cups berries
2 cup granulated sweetening
0.45 teaspoon powdered klah bark
4 teaspoons citrus juice
2-4 tablespoons butter

Half a dozen Gather-pies:
1/4 cup butter
1 tablespoons granulated sweetening
1.5 cups flour
1/4 teaspoon salt
1/4 cup ice water
3 cups berries
1/2 cup granulated sweetening
0.15 teaspoon powdered klah bark
1 teaspoons citrus juice
1/2 tablespoons butter

Again, the question went through his mind with a chaser of irritation: what did a Weyrleader need with figures, anyway? So long as he could manage his Marks when he went to a Gather and knew what the date was, who cared?

Drumer bet and piper blow harper stryk and solger go fre the flam and ser the grases til the daning Red Star pases

from the Weyr and from the Boll brons and bron and blu and gren riz the dragonmen of Pern alawfd on wing sen then unsen

onir thoz the dragons hed in thot and favor word and ded worls r lost or worls r sayv from thoz daygers dragons brayv

dragonman avoy ekses gred wil breng the Weyr distres to the aynchent laws adere prospers thus the dragonweyr

Kerso was really quite pleased with his transcription of the Harper's dictation. But the man's abrupt, "Alright, you're good to go. Check in with the Headwoman after supper tonight," was scarcely the praise he expected. He fumed over the encounter as he wandered back to his bunkroom; he figured he could waste some time before reporting back to the kitchens for the rest of his morning slavery. By the time he'd reached his room, he'd decided that what this Harper thought didn't matter - the man was a lowly Journeyman anyway; who did he think was he to criticize the future Weyrleader of his Weyr?

When Kerso arrived after dinner, Headwoman Nataly was standing behind her desk, scowling over crossed arms.

"Alright, boy, you've got some straightening up to do," she snapped, putting an emphasis on "boy." "You should have reported back to the kitchens immediately after your interview with Harper Timiny, not gone skulking off to your bunk to laze around! What do you think you were going to do here, sit on your behind and everyone would wait on you?"

"Ask any of the dragonriders here. Being a rider isn't all sunshine and daisies, it's a lot of hard work, and you will contribute. I'm trying to help you out here and expose you to aspects of Pernese life you probably haven't ever thought about, because I know from your behavior that you didn't like what you had. That may mean you're going to be trying out things around the Weyr that you also don't like. Next time you skip out on the chores I've assigned to you, you'll be working the fields and cleaning latrines, you hear me?"

As she spoke, she uncrossed her arms, put her knuckles on the desk and leaned forward over it. Having finished her tirade, she leaned back and picked up a sheet of paper and scanned it before sighing.

"Lad, I hope your reading, writing, and math skills aren't typical of your home hold. Harper Timiny has sent a recommendation to the Harper Hall to make sure someone sends a couple of Journeymen down there to find out. Starting the day after this coming Restday, you'll be reporting to Harper Timiny after supper for lessons. By then, we should have some more Candidates and you likely won't be alone. Now, off with you, and remember what I've said about your duties!" With that statement and a wave of her hand, she dismissed Kerso and sat down, selecting several sheets of paper and starting to examine them.

She’d enjoyed her first night at the weyr, finding the beds to be not too bad to sleep on. They were nothing in comparison to the one back home, but she had expected that. After all, she had gone from being the daughter of the Lord Holder, to simply being another candidate. Her background meant little to nothing at the weyr… unless she were to fail at becoming a dragonrider. Easily she moved from her bed, got cleaned up and ready for the day. Once she had completed a few odds and ends before she headed towards the harper’s office.
When she arrived, she knocked politely before stepping inside, “Good morning,” she greeted him before sitting down at the indicated table. She sat politely, awaiting his instructions until he held up a piece of paper. Being the daughter – even the youngest one – of a lord holder had afforded her certain amenities that others might not have had… for one, her parents had made certain that she had learned the skills required to become a lady holder, should that option befall her.
“Seas boil and mountains move,
Sands heat, dragons prove
Red Star passes.
Stones pile and fires burn
Green withers, arm Pern.
Guard all passes.
Star Stone watch, scan sky.
Ready the Weyrs, all riders fly;
Red Star passes.

Barley is a cereal grain that can be brewed as a tea to combat symptoms of cystitis, which is a common complaint of female dragonriders.

A weaver's-length is the length from nosetip to extended arm fingertip, or approximately one yard.

The Yokohoma? was commanded by Admiral Paul Benden and carried 2,900 people.” She read easily, pausing for only a moment when she reached the name of the shuttle that had carried the settlers to Pern. She tried to think if she had heard the name before, but she couldn’t remember for certain. She had never been good with remembering historical events… or even names from historical events.
She paused, waiting for further instructions before reading the recipe to herself. She then began working on the information. Softly muttering to herself any parts of the equation she needed to work out. By the time she was done, the worksheet ended up looking much like this:
1 Dozen Tarts
CRUST
1 Cup Butter
4 tablespoons of granulated sweetening
5 cups of flour
1 teaspoon salt
1 cup of ice water.
FILLING
10 cups of berries
2 cups of granulated sweetening
½ teaspoon of powdered klah bark
2-4 tablespoons of butter

Half a dozen Gather pies
CRUST
¼ cup of butter
1 tablespoon of granulated sweetening
1 ¼ cups of flour
¼ teaspoon of salt
¼ cup of ice cold water
FILLING
1 ¼ cups of berries
¼ cup of granulated sweetening
1/8 teaspoon powdered klah bark
½ teaspoon citrus juice
¼ - ½ tablespoons of butter

Once she was done filling out the sand table, she paused and looked it over. Her goal was to double check her work, although she wasn’t certain if she got them all correct. Once done she glanced up at the harper, pausing for a moment until he told her to transcribe the next part into the sand. Easily she bent over the tablet and began to write down what he said.
Drummer beat and piper blow,
Harper strike and soldier go,
Free the flame and sear the grasses,
Till the dawning Red Star passes.

From the weyr and from the bowl,
Brown and brown and blue and green,
Rise the dragonmen of Pern,
Aloft, on wing, seen then unseen,

Honor those the dragons heed,
In thought and favor, word and deed,
Worlds are lost and worlds are saved,
From those dangers dragon braved.

Dragonmen, avoid excess,
Greed will bring the weyr distress,
To the ancient laws adhere,
Prospers thus the dragonweyr.

Once she was done with that as well, she looked to the harper and nodded her head when he dismissed her. “Thank you,” she stated softly before rising from the table and leaving the room. She wasn’t certain how the test had gone, but she had certainly done her best.

When Artemis reported to Headwoman Nataly after supper, the Headwoman almost looked surprised to see her. "Oh, yes, Artemis, come in. We'll keep this short and sweet," she said, shuffling the papers she was reviewing together into a neat stack and setting them aside so she could clasp her hands and lean into her desk from her seat behind it.

"As I would expect, given your upbringing, you passed Harper Timiny's tests with exceptional scores. No, not perfect, but quite sufficient for Candidacy. You're welcome to join the remedial classes that take place in the evenings after supper, starting after Restday, but you're in no way obligated to do so. You would also be welcome to assist Harper Timiny in teaching the others who need such classes, if you so desire.

"Otherwise, you're free to do as you wish during the hours between supper and lights-out. And with that, I'll let you get back to your free time,"
the Headwoman smiled and leaned back and lifted the stack of papers again, quietly dismissing Artemis.

After his meeting with the headwoman, he had been more than willing to take the time to go and relax. What was more, was that he was informed that his meeting with harper Timiny wouldn’t be until after his sister’s meeting with the harper. Thus, he waited until his was his turn (all the while wondering why his sister seemed to be first at all of these things). When it was finally his chance to head inside, he easily sat down and nodded to the harper before setting about the test.
“Seas boil and mountains move,
Sands heat, dragons prove
Red Star passes.
Stones pile and fires burn
Green withers, arm Pern.
Guard all passes.
Star Stone watch, scan sky.

He had pronounced everything rather well, although he had been slightly more interested in their grandfather’s ramblings about all the stuff they’d found with that strange computer thing that the colonists had brought with them from Earth.
Next, he settled down to work on the math problems.
1 Dozen Tarts
CRUST
1 Cup Butter
4 tablespoons of granulated sweetening
5 cups of flour
1 teaspoon salt
1 cup of ice water.
FILLING
10 cups of berries
2 cups of granulated sweetening
½ teaspoon of powdered klah bark
8 teaspoons citrus juice
2-4 tablespoons of butter
Half a dozen Gather pies
CRUST
¼ cup of butter
1 tablespoon of granulated sweetening
1 ¼ cups of flour
¼ teaspoon of salt
¼ cup of ice cold water
FILLING
1 ¼ cups of berries
¼ cup of granulated sweetening
1/8 teaspoon powdered klah bark
½ teaspoon citrus juice
¼ - ½ tablespoons of butter
He frowned when he was done, wondering just how many times he had spent with his father and their tutor learning all this math information. While he might not have spent a lot of time using it for cooking (in fact he had never even TRIED to cook something), he certainly could do his equations. It was one of the things his parents had forced upon him, and his grandparents were no better! In fact, he remembered one time when Jaxom had actually told him that he would not be allowed to play with Ruth until he had gotten a decent grade dealing with numbers.

Drummer, beat, and piper, blow,
Harper, strike, and soldier, go.
Free the flame and sear the grasses

Once he was done filling out the rest of the test, he handed it all to the harper and thanked him for his time. With that he turned and headed from the room, going about whatever chores he had throughout the day before reporting to the headwoman after supper.

Kat had not exactly been looking forward to meeting with the harper. This, she knew, was a test and, though understandable, she hated tests. She could read, write and knew her numbers. Being a breeder like her father required such knowledge if they were to be able to study genetics and bloodlines properly. But it was a necessity and she'd go through with it if she had to. That did not, however, mean she had to like it.

Luckily, her appointment was early in the day and she could have it done and over with sooner rather than later. She entered the office and tried not to wince at the clutter. Her father would have a fit if his office ever looked like that but she didn't say anything, merely took the indicated seat and accepted the paper he handed her. She glanced at the paper when instructed to read and resisted the urge to roll her eyes before starting.

"Seas boil and mountains move,
Sands heat, dragons prove
Red Star passes.
Stones pile and fires burn
Green withers, arm Pern.
Guard all passes.
Star Stone watch, scan sky.
Ready the Weyrs, all riders fly;
Red Star passes."

Everyone should know that little verse and if they didn't they obviously lived under a rock or something.

"Barley is a cereal grain that can be brewed as a tea to combat symptoms of cystitis, which is a common complaint of female dragonriders."

That, at least, was somewhat educational if not particularly relevant to anything as far as Kat was concerned. But she did tuck the knowledge away for potential future use.

"A weaver's-length is the length from nosetip to extended arm fingertip, or approximately one yard.

The Yokohama was commanded by Admiral Paul Benden and carried 2,900 people."

Once she'd finished reading she eyed the harper as he gave her the next instructions. She glanced at her paper and then at the sand table. "Am I marking down my answers in the sand or do I get quill and ink to makr it down here on the paper?" She tried very hard to keep the sass out of her voice but it was difficult as she was wondering how she could be expected to write anything without ink. Once the answer had been given she turned her attention to the task of figuring out the numbers.

Tarts:
Crust:
  • 1 cup butter
  • 4 tablespoons granulated sweetening
  • 5 cups flour
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 cup ice water
Filling:
  • 10 cups berries
  • 2 cup granulated sweetening
  • 1/2 teaspoon powdered klah bark
  • 4 teaspoons citrus juice
  • 2-4 tablespoons butter

Pies:
Crust:
  • 1/4 cup butter
  • 1 tablespoons granulated sweetening
  • 1.25 cups flour
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 cup ice water
Filling:
  • 1 1/4 cups berries
  • 1/8 cup granulated sweetening
  • 0.06 teaspoon powdered klah bark
  • 1/2 teaspoon citrus juice
  • 1/4-1/2 tablespoons butter

She was fairly certain she'd gotten her numbers right though she may have missed a couple. Her artihmatic wasn't perfect after all and she was hardly used to baking recipes. But still, if she wasn't exact she knew she had to be rather close. And at least this testing seemed to be nearly over when she was told to write what the harper said.

Drummer, beat, and piper, blow,
Harper, strike, and soldier, go.
Free the flame and sear the grasses
Till the dawning Red Star passes.

From the Weyr and from the Bowl,
Bronze and brown and blue and green,
Rise the dragonmen of Pern,
Aloft, on wing, seen, then unseen.

Honor those the dragons heed,
In thought and favor, word and deed.
Worlds are lost or worlds are saved
From those dangers dragon-braved.

Dragonman, avoid excess;
Greed will bring the Weyr distress;
To the ancient Laws adhere,
Prospers thus the Dragonweyr.

That done, she waited until she was excused and exited the room as fast as she could and not appear to be in a hurry to leave. "Sharding tests. I better have passed or that harper is never going to hear the end of it." She grumbled once she was out of earshot and went about her daily routine, ready to meet the headwoman after supper as instructed.

Shortly after Artemis checked in, Apollo arrived. "Hmm, I should have had you come in together. Harper Timiny and I would greatly appreciate it if you would help out in the evenings with teaching. Your roommate, Kerso, could use some serious assistance with his reading, writing, and arithmetic, and he might take it better from you than from me or Harper Timiny. It's entirely up to you, though. The time between supper and lights-out is your time to do with as you wish."

The Headwoman was amused at the Harper's annoyance with the newest Candidate. She'd passed with an almost perfect score, but she had a bit of an attitude problem. She had, of course, picked up on this in her original interview and had given him fair warning.

"As I'm sure you're aware, you passed with excellent scores. I'd like to ask you to help teach others, including your fellow Candidates, in the evenings after supper if you're interested. If not, your evenings are yours to do with what you wish, up until lights-out when you need to be in your bed, of course." She smiled at the end of the statement to demonstrate a little humor.

Fayble waited her turn, and after being called upon slowly made it into the room. What other tests would she have to do? Answering questions, being judged. It almost made her angry.

When she was told to read the text on the page she held it for a long time, her eyes focused on the words and she cleared her throat. Her reading was that of recipies, but thankfully as a writer she was self taught. Not very good but good enough.

"Seas boil and mou-mountains move...
Sands heat, dragons prove...
Red Star passes...
St..stones pile and fires burn...
Green wi-wi-...yeah okay, arm Pern...
Guard all passes...
Star Stone watch, scan sky.
Ready the Weyrs, all riders fly;
Red Star passes.

Barley is a cereal grain that can be brewed as a tea to combat sym..oh shards it I don't know that word, of that's not a real word... which is a common comp-comp...complaint of female dragon...riders.

A weaver's-length is the length from nose tip to ex...extended arm fingertip, or approx. one yard.

The Y dude was commanded by Admiral Paul Benden and carried 2,900 people."

Feeling shaken she saw the next challenge, but was pleased it was something she knew, and she knew well.

Uh Dozen Crust:
1 cup butter
4 tablespoons granulated sweetening
5 cups flour
1 teaspoon salt
1 cup ice water
Filling:
10 cups berries
2 cup granulated sweetening
1/2 teaspoon powdered klah bark
4 teaspoons citrus juice
2-4 tablespoons butter

6 Crust:
1/4 cup butter
1 tablespoons granulated sweetening
1 1/4 cups flour
1/4 teaspoon salt
1/4 cup ice water
Filling:
1 1/4 cups berries
1/4 cup granulated sweetening
1/16 teaspoon powdered klah bark
1/2 teaspoons citrus juice
1/4-1/2 tablespoons butter

Finally another, to see if she could transcribe. She took the challenge feeling better after the recipe.

Drummer beat and pipper blow.
Harper strike and soldjer go.
Free the flame and sear the grasses.
Till the dawning red star passes.

Frome the weyr and from the bowel.
Braunze and brown and blue and green.
Rise the dragon men of pern.
A loft on wing seen then un seen.

Honor those the dragons head.
In thawt and favor word and deed.
Worlds are lost or worlds are saved.
From those dangers dragon braved.

Dragon man avoid axcess.
Greed will bring the weyr destress.
To the ancient laws add here.
Prawspor thus the dragon weyr.

Proudly she stepped away from her work checking for any errors that she could precieve, happy with it she smiled up at Timiny with the confidence that she normally had. "That was fun!"

EDIT: I totally botched the name of the interviewer cause I'm awesome.

After supper, Nataly sat down with Fayble. "You need a little work on your letters, but your reading and math skills are acceptable. After supper, Harper Timiny's teaching a remedial class, you should attend at least for a little while to touch up your writing skills. Oh, and Artemis is helping tutor - with a little help from her, I think you'll be up to speed in no time."
