Lee wandered down to the Weyrbowl, scuffing his feet and kicking a pebble along.  His mother had shooed him out of their quarters for the afternoon.  It was their Rest Day and he was bored.

He changed the direction of the pebble and chased it along the inner wall of the volcanic cone that served as their home, meandering toward the lake.  As he approached the lake, he considered the temperature.  It was fairly warm out, and there were some weyrlings splashing around in the lake.  He grinned to himself as he watched the young dragons frolicking in the water, much to the exasperation of their humans who were trying to bathe them.  A swim sounded good, he decided, but he knew better than to go down there alone.  Weyrling riders usually considered themselves above weyrbrats, especially ones as young as himself.

"I'll just go find Torloner," he muttered to himself, his eyes lighting up mischievously as he considered all the fun they could have.  He turned and went searching for the other boy.  The two often played at being dragonriders; both bronzes, of course.  The older dragons usually looked on this indulgently, but the younger dragons were often puzzled by young humans pretending to be dragonriders, and it was fun to torment them (which actually, was more of a torment to their riders more than to the dragons themselves).

Torloner sat on a ledge overlooking the lake. Plumes of water were sprayed into the air as dragons dove in and out of the lake.

Crooning rose from the shore on Torloner's left. Although he was watching a particularly playful green skip across the water, Torloner knew that if he looked at the shore he would find several dragons being scrubbed with sand by their riders. The crooning was a symphony of individual notes. Frowning, he closed his eyes and listened for a moment. He could almost pick out his favorite dragon's sound. The blue's scales flashed with an iridescence as it played. Torloner loved watching it at the lake because it rolled under the water more than any of the other dragons.

Sighing, Torloner opened his eyes. He was too young to impress yet. A determined light flashed in his eyes. He would impress one day!

He picked up the knife and scattered lengths of hollowed out wood he had scattered in front of him. He began shaping one of the longer tubes. He still needed to find twine to connect the tubes once he had finished shaping them. Fortunately the Harper had let him see the instrument up close yesterday.

Lee spotted Torloner sitting on one of the rocks that overlooked the lake. He picked up his pace and jogged over. "Hey, Torloner, how 'bout a swim?" he called as he approached. "Mother kicked me out for the day and I ain't got anythin' better to do."

He flung himself down next to his friend and looked at what the other boy had in his hands. "Whatcha doin'?"

Torloner didn't respond to Lee for a moment. His tongue was stuck out to the left in concentration while he shaped one of the hollow wooden tubes. After the knife cleared the end of the tube Torlorner looked at Lee. "Making a panflute. Master Lione let me look at his yesterday. I'm going to be a harper!" Holding up his hollow tube, Torlorner grinned triumphantly.

Looking at the tube for a moment, Torlorner's grin faded. The tube wasn't quite straight and he wasn't sure how to make sound with it. "Maybe a swim sounds better than finishing this right now."

Lee rolled his eyes. "You KNOW Harpers are NEVER dragonriders. Even Masterharper Robinton, who could talk to all the dragons, never became a dragonrider" he stated with the air of superiority of being a mature 7-year-old. Then he screwed up his face and did a respectable immitation of Harper Lione: "Harpers are too in-des-spend-able to have their work or training put on hold for the years it takes to become a dragonrider." He stammered over the long word. "Besides, you can't officially start training as a Harper until you're 12. You're only 9. And when you turn 12, they'll be flying you all over the WORLD to stand at Hatchings, so you won't have time to take a Craft anyway. That's why I want to be a Tanner and a Tailor and a Herder. Those are all useful Crafts for dragonriders and anyone else living in the Weyr."

Nevermind that Lee was only 7 and the same thing would happen to him, and no one in their right mind took on three Crafts.

"Yeah!" Lee shouted when Torloner agreed to a swim. Scrambling to his feet, he called back over his shoulder, "First one to the water gets the big rock!" There were a handful of rocks on one side of the lake that weyrbrats often pretended were their dragons, and "the big rock" was the biggest (which, of course, meant it was a bronze, unless there was a girl in the group, in which case it was always a gold).

Feel free to mention C'gan and his blue Tagath, since Lee so boldly brought up Robinton.

Torlorner's mind raced as Lee talked. As Lee scrambled up to his feet, Torlorner yelled after him, "What about C'gan? It CAN happen." He pushed himself off his feet, stretching his long legs to catch up to Lee. Being two years older, Torlorner had the length to do it.

Once he was abreast of Lee, he hooked one foot around Lee's ankle, taking him to the ground. They both rolled in ball. Torlorner tried to control the roll so he could come out with Lee in a headlock. "Who's the bronzerider," Torloner shouted, before coughing emphatically from the cloud of dust they had kicked up.

The younger boy yelped when his friend tripped him and barely got his hands up in time to keep from faceplanting into the dirt. Then Torlorner was on top of him and they were rolling about in the dust and he barely heard his friend's shouted question. "I AM!" Lee grunted, twisting and avoiding a true headlock, but he was smaller than Torlorner, so he was bound to lose unless he did something unsportsmanlike. Instead, he tried to wrap his hands around the other boy's waist and...well...bullrush wouldn't be quite the right word, since they were on the ground, but he hoped to roll over on their sides and push off with his feet to roll them and try to end up on top.

He was coughing and sputtering in the miasma they were kicking up in their scuffle, and he'd gotten a fleck of dirt in one eye, so he had them clenched shut while they wrestled. After a couple minutes, he heard a high-pitched girl's voice shouting at them, although he wasn't listening to what she was saying: "Stop it, you two! You are ruining your clothes! Stop it! Torlorner, leave him alone!"

Fully immersed in the wrestling, Torlorner froze when he heard the high pitched voice yelling at them. He looked at Lee, who had managed to twist in the headlock and was looking back at his eyes. Torlorner whispered, "Roll towards? Or away?" Torlorner's eyes sparkled with mischief.

Lee kept thrashing for a moment after Torlorner froze, not realizing at first what was going on. He managed to get his legs braced under him before he ascertained what was happening.

"Towards, of course," Lee hissed. He rolled his eyes. Lery was always chiding the pair of them for "acting like brats," to which Lee liked to point out, "we ARE Weyrbrats." That would usually be followed by some childish activity, like throwing mud at her, or pushing her into the midden, or something else equally boyish and hooliganish.

Conveniently, the direction that Lee had been going to shove off toward after he braced his feet happened to be the direction they wanted to go, and he gave an almighty (for a 7-year-old) shove, releasing his grip on his friend's waist and trying to turn the shove into a tumble that would separate the pair of them enough that they wouldn't get tangled until they pulled Lery down in the dust and dirt.

Not surprised by 'Lee's move, one he commonly used when they wrestled, Torloner let himself be flung off. In fact, he might have pushed off, adding to the distance he would fly. He also grabbed 'Lee's shoulder as he went backwards. With a mighty bellow in his child's voice he cried, "For dragons! To Lery!
