Check-in with Candidatemaster Lery - Mon Jan 17, 2022 3:04 pm
Kimta spent his afternoons working in the Infirmary, usually preserving herbs or mixing tinctures. Normally, he found that incredibly boring, but he happened to know that one of his fellow journeymen had already had his interview with the Headwoman, and that fellow would be spending his afternoon in the stillroom. As soon as he got a chance, he started asking Quarion about the interview. To his disappointment, there wasn't much Quarion could tell him. Apparently, the Headwoman asked personal questions and assigned him to new quarters and to a group to do chores for the Weyr, and then the Harper they'd brought with them gave him a reading, writing, and arithmetic quiz. How anticlimatic! Despite the letdown of his conversation with Quarion, he was still wound up by the time his scheduled appointment arrived.
He arrived at the door promptly as the four gongs sounded to mark the hour in the Great Hall, finding the Headwoman standing next to her desk, talking to another woman. Kimta thought he recognized her, but he wasn't sure. Lery looked up as he knocked on the door. "Ah, here's my next appointment. I'll have your group half-staffed after this. You'll have a full staff tomorrow."
"Thank you, Lery. See you after dinner?"
"Of course. C'mon in, Kimta, have a seat." The other woman turned and studied him for a moment, then left, closing the door behind her. "Something to eat or drink?"
"No, thank you. Dinner's not that far off. I'd have some water, though, if you have it?"
He heard a noise that sounded suspiciously like a snort, but she was facing away from him and he couldn't be sure. "Well, just make sure you get enough to eat when you do." She turned back with two glasses of water and handed one to him. They both sat at the table. He absently wondered if or when she was going to get a real desk. All the makeshift things they'd been dealing with throughout the Weyr was obnoxious; but at least the Healers were getting first pick of everything. They actually had nearly all the equipment they needed, very few things were improvised.
"What is for dinner? It smelled good when I came through the Hall."
Lery smiled. "Roast pig. B'nin and Risoth finally tracked down and caught that feral boar that was terrorizing New Dorado and stealing their sows. Caught a second feral sow with him, so we'll be eating fresh pork tonight and putting up the rest. Back to fish and wherry tomorrow." Her smile widened a bit when he groaned. "Well, Alina will have my hide if I don't get you out of here on time." Then she settled down to business, asking him questions. "Alright. Timiny should be here in a minute. You'll be in Bunkroom #4, and Chores Group K. Head to the Kitchens and report to Alina at 5pm."
